Our neighbors were emptying there old boathouse and i managed to snag this from the garbage pile, it's made of wood and has a couple layers of paint in yellow and red, in the top there is a place where a wood dowel would have been but it seems like it snapped and got nailed to the front of it, i think it may have been a place that a flag would have been, so i got thinking and i thought it may be an old float or marker of some kind or maybe even nailed to a dock or anythng else, could you shed some light on my thoughts and if it is an old buoy or marker i would like to find out what its purpose was and how long the original dowel and flag would have looked like so i might be able to restore it one day. it measures about 15'' by 6'' inches

That's very interesting - I'm glad you saved it . Because it's red it may have been a warning marker for submerged rocks or something . Is the wood pine maybe ?

To me it looks like the runner board so when they were entering the boat house they could see it and not hit the dock.

thanks for the info, it is definetly a type of soft wood probably pine. it's a bit too heavy to be cedar

that was actually my first thought but didnt mention it. but seeing the dowell on the top or side didnt make sence for that purpose. i'll research it though to double check
