Been doing this field for a few years now and occasionally I keep stopping back in to see if I can pick anything more out of it. I was quite surprise to still get six more flat buttons and one is quite large. I finished up a few hours there with a neat little Bugler on a horse & Drummer near a tent type thing.

Anyone ever seen one before? field buttons 10.05.14 Lyons.jpgfife and drum back.jpgfife and drum back front.jpg

Thanks for any info you can come up with!

Hello Diggincoinz. Real nice digs. I especially like that horse and drummer thing. Good luck. C9

Definitely a watch winder. Have you looked at the large button after cleaning off the dirt? Is there any type of design on it? Some really good finds there.

Awesome finds, love the buttons and the watch key is awesome. The watch keys come in many shapes and sizes. Yours is particularly ornate. The last one I found is posted below just as confirmation for you. Even though different you can easily tell they serve the same purpose. Congrats.

Thanks guys that's pretty cool! How do I find out its age or era? Are there any kind of websites that help identify these things?

Nice watch winder and a great group of buttons.

Thank you for sharing your hunt and those pictures with us

Those are some wonderful old buttons. I get as excited finding an old one as much as finding silver coins. I thought your relic looked like a watch winder but didn't know, so I am very glad Tnguns ID'ed it as such.

That is a super cool watch winder and it's in great condition!! I just love it

Great finds there but like the watch winder best !!

that's one of the coolest watch winders I've ever seen posted

Cool winder, have seen 3 or 4 posted in the last short while, but this is by far the nicest.

As far as date, could be anything before about 1890's, when key wind watches were replaced by stem wind movements.

Thanks guys. I'm guessing it's in the era of 1820's. All the buttons found over the years in this field were like those shown here - early flat buttons and if i recall correctly the one large cent I plucked out a couple years back was dated 1823.

My thinking is the watch and it's winder are a little older than the other finds. The guy MAY HAVE carried the watch and it's winder around for 5 to 10 years before losing the winder.
