This past weekend, I went to an old cellar hole that I have hit many times. My best find there was an 1838 large cent two years ago. On Saturday, I got an interesting octagonal brass or copper item with the numbers "714" on the front, which I think might be an old dog license of some sort. Does anyone have a different ideas as to what it might be?

After digging the tag, I got a real strong signal that might have been another large cent, only to find that I was practically standing on top of a nest of yellowjacket hornets. Can't hear them buzzing with the headphones on. After getting stung once and fighting off a few more angry bees, I retreated and left the possible large cent in the ground! I will return later in the fall/early winter when the bees are asleep to recover my prize.

On Sunday, went back to this site and avoided the beehive. I recovered a slick copper at a depth of 4.5 to 5 inches in rock-hard clay soil. This might be a King George farthing that was worn slick before it was dropped. Does not appear to be a half cent or large cent. I also pulled out a reasonably nice 1862 copper-nickel indian at 1" depth, which I thought was going to be another shotgun shell, so that was a nice surprise.

Any help with identifying the "714" tag would be appreciated.

It's too big to have been a farthing. Farthings are more the size of two cent pieces. It was more likely a KG halfpenny. Nice finds.

I have a disc alot like yours..after weighing it an a few other stuff .. DonSJ is pretty sure it was a Liberty cap penny..Check the rimS SIDE to see if there are any letters remaining onit...

Nice Indian, 1862 would be one of the 'fatty' variety and those are really cool to find. The copper does have that thin and corroded KG look to it. If is is thin (thinner than US. copper) I would say KG also. Nice finds 8)

We can match up wasp stings buddy. I got hit by four the other day while trying to dig a measly 1972 penny....Good luck upon your return in the colder weather/ safer digging time..... :tongue3: jgas

I was working in the garage and got buzzed by a hornet. I took an old ladel pan and knocked him down only to be barraged by 20 of his buddies. got one in the chin and brushed one off my shoulder. they got the raid treatment for that attack.

The blank copper disk is too thin to be a half cent or large cent. The coin was so worn when it was lost that the edge is almost sharpened like a knife blade. I am thinking it's a King George of some sort that was worn slick in circulation, then lost in the mid 1800s. Weighing it would be pointless due to wear and corrosion removing a lot of the metal. I spent more than 20 minutes carefully digging it through hard-packed clay soil and tree roots, only to find that it was unidentifiable. It gave a blazing clear +88 signal on my White's spectrum at 4.5" depth, so it could have easily been a Bust or Seated quarter, or a nice large cent. There is very little in the way of modern coins/junk at this site, which is a cellar hole that is a 15 minute walk from the nearest road, so careful digging is a "must" on any good signal. When I saw the first chips of green dirt flaking away, I was certain that I had a nice large cent, but not this time.

I like the suggestion that the 714 tag is a tool check. Didn't think of that, but it seems plausible.

No help on the tag or unknown coin, but a GREAT Indian find there, Rhed!! 8)

Nana :)
