Found this thing about 7 inches down at on old lighthouse built in 1879.

It seems to have stamp letters and/or numbers in a circular way in the center of the piece.
It has a hole on top which appears to be a way to suspend it from a necklace.

I mistakenly damaged it with my shovel while diggin :nono:...exposing the appearance that the item is copper.

No idea what it is or how old it is??!?!?

Anyone have a clue?

Thanks

Can you read any of the letters? The shape is not consistent with a dog tag, but it could be homemade. Reading any of the inscription would help ID the find.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

It all bent up and hard to tell but there were oval shaped dog tags but it could also be an ID tag or key tag or something else. It looks non symetrical.

Looks more like a spinner from an old fishing lure to me, can you make out the numbers? They could be helpful.

Yeah after comparison it does appear to be a "spinner". Dont know much about fishing.

It is green..which is indicative of old copper. Was dug on land...not on a beach.

After looking at the circular "inscription"... it now looks like maybe tool marks used to shape the item...they are "o" shaped impressions.

It is not really bent up...just manufactured imperfectly...even where the material was cut looks hand made (imperfect).

Thanks...I think this might be a fishing lure spinner...but how old??.

Any way to maybe get an approximate age of this?..if so they have a museum at this lighthouse..maybe ill see if they want it.

Thanks for all the help!

Big CY: I wonder how long people were forced to have their dog wear an Iron Cross. Even in the 1920's, I would find that objectionable. Of course, some politician could have called them a Malteese cross, and there you go. Of course, the M. C. was pretty omnipresent with the Germans being only one of dozens of users of it. I think our Army marksmanship medal is a malteese cross. Maybe I am just being too historically sensative.

Note: there is malteese cross dog tag in the photo offered by BCH. My statement, though politically charged, was regarding that photo, and dog tags in general. So apparently, I tried to steal 3rd and was put out. Sorrrrreeee.

I'm not sure if there's any way to date it if it's handmade. The circular marks though would have probably been done on purpose to give it more flash in the water. If you can figure out when they started doing that you might find one end of a date range.

Exactly. I have seen oval dog tags, but not egg shaped ones that are a bit narrower at the top than the bottom. :dontknow:
