soldiers made their own dog tags all the time....some were just to identify their duffel bag and other items...sometimes they got lost and simply made their own to replace them

A man with that name lives (?) in Auburn Kansas; and maybe another (or the same) who lives (?) in Dover, KS.
Vera E. Hickey, age, 89 lives in Auburn, Kansas and lists Glenwood M. Hickey as a relative. Perhaps he's still alive.
Good luck in finding him and returning his tag.

Too late for that lead:

Vera Evelyn Hickey, 80, formerly of Topeka, died Monday, Nov. 4. 2002 at a Perris, Calif. hospital. She moved to Perris in 1999. She married Glennwood M. Hickey in September 1944. He died in January. Mrs. Hickey has four daughters, Eleanor Blakley, Perris, Nancy Koch, Auburn, Sandra Gilliland.
You might try contacting the Perris, Calif. hospital for an 'next of kin' notification.

Social security numbers have 9 digits; more likely his service number.
BTW, Valley Plaza Doctors Hospital was the General Acute Care Hospital in Perris with Basic Emergency Services as of 2006. However, this hospital is now closed down. You may wish to contact the Riverside County government to obtain the location of that hospital's records in 2002. Then again, it might be easier to find the mortuary that handled the death of the Mrs. and ask them for the next of kin information.

Another report shows she lived in these areas: •Sun City, CA•Perris, CA•San Jacinto, CA•Auburn, KS•Hemet, CA•Topeka, KS --and gives an address of: 28386 Long St, Sun City, CA 92585 (Sun City is a retirement community not far from Perris and Hemet, California.)

I'm sure that one of his grandchildren would like to get back that tag--but a commitment to research is necessary.
Good luck,
Don.....
