Welcome to TreasureNet, txkickergirl. It's nice to have you with us. Did you dig this dagger out of the ground? It's in very nice condition. It reminds me of a Middle Eastern dagger. But that's just an uneducated guess.

it surfaced in an old hog pen a few years back and I have had it thinking I would do some research on it one of these days. The area is known for in the 1500's de vaca spent several years traveling the area after being shipped wrecked near Galveston. I am thinking about returning and looking around in the near future, with a metal detector. That is where I got the 1500's from, but like I said I don't know anything about it or treasures in general. It's just a hobby I am starting, and I have a feeling , I am already addicted to it! lol

yes one piece its about 10" long and the design on the coat of arms is one square is a crown, then a flower or sunburst then five lines going down and they start small and get longer, then the last square is somesort of animal it looks like a kangaroo to me but could be a lion

Can you post a close up of the animal design? If it's a lion, could be the rampant lion of British design. But I can't see any animal on the current photos.

Greetings Txkickergirl and welcome to T-net!

A neat find you have there! I would like to ask a couple of questions - will a magnet stick to it? Could you post a pic of the other side? I don't want to be a wet blanket but it could be a letter opener instead of a dagger - can you find any inscriptions on it using a magnifying glass? Thank you in advance,
Oroblanco

No, a magnet won't stick to it, the other side looks just like this one same designs, but you can tell that it is hand made because although its the same, its not like a machine made it its slightly different. No writting can be found on it. I took some close up pics but I can't attach them it says that the file is too large. I will email anyone who wants to see those pics. my email is [email protected]

Right where the guard and the blade meet, are those letters? Looks like P.E Like Prince Edward or something. Doesn't your camera's software allow resizing?

Open your pics in microsoft paint (assuming you have windows) and save them as .JPGs, and resize them to like 50%... you shoud be able to post them after doing that. :)

Yeah it does look like a P and the other one I can't make out, but on the other side it looks just like 3 up and down lines. Well good luck with this, I am off to bed for now.

Ah, much better pic, thanks. Yeah, looks like the rampant lion to me. It was a Scottish symbol of strength. But the style of this dagger doesn't look like a Scottish dirk to me. Alchemy would know about this dagger. Hey Alchemy, where are you???

The gold star goes to... Oroblanco!

This is indeed a letter opener, and listed as such on p. 57 of Letter Openers, Advertising & Figural (1996):

Intricate Dagger Design; brass; 10-1/2" — $25

Yeah, the one piece and the magnet not sticking to it,sort of gave it away,it's too bad.Nice looking letter opener nonetheless and worth $25 bucks to boot! :)PBK- Does that particular book list any dates for any of the letter openers? Reason I ask is because I have a couple myself i'm wondering about.

For the most part, no. However, some individual listings do have date information.

Well guess I won't be digging up any ancestors over this one! LOL, but yeah it's still really cool.

I want to thank everyone for their help, and you guys really know your stuff! Hopefully one of these years I will gain a little of the knowledge ya'll have. This is a way cool group, and I can't wait to soak up some of the info and go out and find more goodies.

Thanks
Dawn
