It's more of a "how old is it?".
It's very heavy and stiff. The decorations on front were stamped from the back.
I think it has been plated?
The front shined up with little effort.
The only writing says "PAT AUG 28 1877"
I found it with my Sov XS2 on a site of a recently demolished and long ago abandoned antiques shop.
It had a high coin "like" tone but I knew it was odd shaped; gotta love them Sov's!!
The site also held a residence that dated back to the 1920's I'm told.

Any ideas?

Re: Old curtain hook?

Note that in the text of the inventor's application, he mentions that the hook "can be made highly ornamental with little cost". The coincidence of the patent date with the patent drawing and text; and your pics makes me think it's a picture hook.

Re: Old curtain hook?

Ok ...everyone is correct
Its a chair molding hook that you hang a picture from.....chair molding runs about a foot from the top of the ceiling....the flat end slides in behind the molding and can slide along the edge to where you want to position your picture. Picture was hung from the hook part with a long ribbon or twisted cloth rope.
