Old currency

I believe this post can relate to coin roll hunting because older currency is kind of related to silver coins, etc.

Do you people who CRH also save older style currencies? (1995 series and older)?
As many know, currency has greatly changed over the past years and there are some older style bills.

Look at the $10 for instance, we have the current $10(colored), the Uncolored $10(1999 and newer until colored dates), And the small portrait $10 bill. Here are some pictures if my explaining is not detailed enough:

...Does anyone save the older style bills they get in circulation or from the bank? Tellers at my local bank save me older style bills they come across. I have so far gotten the following for face value from them:

(1) series 1977 $10

I also save all star notes in decant shape newer than 1999, but will keep all star notes older than 1999... anyone else save older style currency or star notes?

Just the older stuff. One of my tellers saved me a red seal five last year. They seem harder to find than silver coins, just isn't the demand for currency I guess.

Coin are just better.. I always tell this story.

A month ago.. a teller showed me she got a $100 bill from 1934 (FED reserve note) and she was psyched.. I looked it up on Feebay and it's worth like $120-140 range depending on condition. If you had $100 in coins from 1934, what would that bring? Hmmm

Coins are better folks. Paper is worthless.

I collect very little currency purely for nostalgia. The "new money" looks cheap and fake to me. I have a few Silver Certificates and some red seals.

I keep some of the older currency because the design doesn't look like it was made by elementary school kids. The new notes (the five, the twenty, the ten, the fifty and soon to be the hundred) look terrible. But on the whole, I'd rather spend that note for coins. The reason why is I received a silver certificate in change, it is a well worn note and worth about $2 to a collector. On the other hand, if the person who owned it had cashed it in for a silver dollar when it was still redeemable, that would be worth $37 just for the silver, regardless of condition. Someone with a $20 gold certificate that was in poor condition could today sell it for $100-200 depending on year, but someone who had redeemed that gold certificate for a double eagle could sell that double eagle for $1514 today just for the gold content.

While some of the earlier, uncirculated examples are worth more than their coin equivalents, most circulated examples go for a lot less than their equivalent in coins.

I have a series 1922 gold certificate $20 bill, but did not get it from circulation, but from an uncle who gave it to me as a birthday gift when I was younger. Imagine $20 gold piece, that would've been great!

I got some red seal $5 bills just because. Have some Silver Certificates. I just like old stuff. I just paid face value at the bank...

i save all star notes, and pre 1970 2's, 5's, 10's, 20's, 50's, and 100's...i also save all pre 1995 1's, and i try to build straps of them and stash them away...hope this helps! keep it up and hh!
