I found this in a historic park that dates to 1880. Found at about 7 inches, which is the same depth I found an 1888 Indian Head. It says " L . I . U " It has a purple paint/film on the face with raised gold metal lettering. It has a pair of pliars and some type of hammer on it. It is rather ornate to be from some article of clothing. Reads High in the VDI scale. It has a back that screws on and off.

Is this some type of labor union button? That's my only guess.

Union button is a real good guess. Unions did a lot of things as promotions and Union pride. :)

I agree with Beavis. I believe it's a lapel pin worn by a member of the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIU), a labor union founded in 1903 and still in existence today. For more information:

You guys are awesome! I think you got it! Quick work you made of this one. I was stumped. It makes sense because it was found in Saginaw, MI, which was a big industrial/lumbering area. I figure it was dropped in the early 1900's based on the depth of it.

Thanks again!
