It has a triangular end . The only markings are 416C - 31 . Any ideas

Looks like a shaker handle for an old coal stove.

Ditto, handle for a 'shaker grate' for a coal burning stove. I got a brand new one with my Wood/coal furnace. Also have one for an old coal fired hot water heater. Coal shaker grate handle.
