I've been hitting an area in front of a stately home in the old part of town. So far it has produced several pre-war wheaties. I went back two nights past and among the meager findings I pulled out of the ground were this 1938 cent and the mystery reeded metal "pillow." My guess is that it belongs to a watch of some sort. It is pea-sized. Would love to have someone i.d. it for me Thanks!

Pocket watch winder.

Right idea. It is a pocket watch "crown." The winding and setting of the watches before the last part of the 1800s was all done with a separate little pocketwatch key. After the CW era or so, the crown-wind and crown-set caught on. :)

Thought I had an old pocket watch with a similar "crown" so I dug it out of the attic, here's a pic.

(Keystone watch is whats pictured but many companies used similar "crowns".)
