I pulled this copper through frozen ground today before the storm hit us in the northeast. It is in rough shape and I know an I’d is tough but I can not figure it out at all any ideas from the wealth of knowledge on this forum would be appreciated. I found it a new permission cellar hole but really didn’t stay long due to the ground being bullet proof.

Interesting find, hope you get an ID! :icon_thumleft:

I'll try but it looks extremely old. DO NOT use any liquids on it or you may destroy it. I used the Andre's pencils for mechanical cleaning or you can use toothpicks. It does look hammered, which most likely would put in the 17th century.

Smokey any ideas I have been searching for hours have even gone into maps of original owners to find origins of their last names and looking at coins that match their country and am coming up with nothing

That coin is really interesting iv been checking every few hours hoping someone can ID it for you ...... is there any definitive markings you can make out on it ? In any case nice find

the only things that I "think I can make out" is I believe I can read part of a word on the rim that says possibly "burling" and one other word next to it that says sh?p or it could all be part of one word. just above the center of the coin has a 23 but I think this stands alone and is not a date.

A "guess" - maybe either a Spanish city state coin, 17th century, there were numerous cities that had their own mintages. The second guess is a 17th century token. I'm not sure which one I'd lean toward, but token might be the ticket.

Not sure but reminds me of a Jetton.

Whatever it is if no one knows it might be very rare it looks freakin cool
Happy new year. Tommy

You might try posting a few more close-up photos in various lighting (try natural light first). These are just a bit out of focus when you zoom in on them.

That one is a mystery to me. Hopefully you can get a positive ID, given that it appears to be in pretty great condition. Regardless....awesome find!!!!!

Is it about the size of a large cent? I did a comparison and it is tough but I think it could be a match to a Hallock & Bates hard times token. I think the one side is counterstamped.

Bramblefind you nailed it!! How in the world did you do it? Thank you for figuring it out the "burling and 23" are pretty key, as you said it is counterstamped as well. Thank all of you for your help I am grateful to have a the mystery solved. As you know with such limited amount of detail and thousands of coppers, tokens and jettons from multiple different countries it is really hard to id when you have limited ideas where to start.
Thanks again.
