I've noticed just about every coin dealer has a good variety of old coins with holes in them. Most Ive seen are in the 1800s period. I also noticed that they have them marked at almost give away prices. My question is how come so many? Were they worn as good luck charms, or was it a style statement or fad, or maybe jewelry was hard to come by? I thought money was tough to come by at that time and used for everyday needs. Im surprised that so much was worn and not spent.

money was worth alot more then today
they would hang it from a cord like a necklace
so they wouldnt drop out of the pocket during heavy labor or hunting etc

I have picked up some nice key dates at antique shops because they have holes in them. They are perfect for filling holes in your sets or to turn around and make a nice sale.

I have heard that coins with holes were sewn into the lining of clothes when someone was going on a long journey. Not easily lost or stolen but available when needed.

Also, pockets weren't in clothes until much later on. Originally, folks kept coins in pouches hung from around their waists, or in a poke hidden in their belongings, or (as someone mentioned above) hung around a chain or sewn in a garment). I found two 1841 dated coins this year (a half dime and a Large Cent), and both were holed. I would also like to share a photo of this coin, which was a half dime turned into a button (a excellent, practical way to use a coin, and also to hold on to it for spending).
