Hi all. I found this in Woodbury N.J. Looks like a coin. About the size of a silver dollar. Can't make out anything on it.Is there a way to clean it without damage? Found the ring too!

Looks like an old English penny.

Its thickness (or rather, thin-ness) indicates it may be a Colonial-era "flat button." Although most such buttons are much smaller, I've seen a few which are as wide as a half-dollar and a silver-dollar.

Please provide accurate measurement of its diameter.

Clean the object and look at the very center of both sides of it. A flat-button almost always will retain a visible trace of the spot where its loop was attached to its back. Usually, the loop was soldered onto the button, but sometimes a type of brazing was used. Look for any evidence of that, where the loop would have been located.

I have found some buttons more than 2" in diameter. The style was seen on overcoats at the turn of the 18th/19th centuries. They weren't usually functional, just there for fashion.
