Old Coca Cola Roller Skate Key

Hey, WV—

Was it an actual skate key, or maybe a bottle opener like the one shown below? Although the square hole looks as if it might be used for tightening skates— and probably could be— it was actually intended for use in adjusting the gas flow on old-time carbide auto lights. This was a fairly common feature on bottle openers of the early 1900's, and there are several different Coca-Cola openers with square holes. This one has a patent date of Feb. 19, 1901, and reportedly remained in use as a promotional item until about 1915. I've seen it listed for less than $50 in some price guides, but a few years ago one brought $136 on eBay.

Thanks for responding , If memory serves it didn't look like the one you pictured . It did have a square hole in one end though . I'll get a picture & post it .
