Some slightly better pics with an idea of size will help. :icon_scratch:

Re: old cellar hole find

Also, when you retake the picture it is best not to use a white background. When white is exposed properly, object is underexposed and you lose detail. Better to use a colored (blue, red, green work well) background. You can also adjust the exposure with your photo software to give the most detail.

Just my 2 cents.

Try taking the pictures outside in sunlight, flash off, because your indoor lighting is not sufficient. I think two of your pics are at night. You may not be holding steady with the camera. It may very well be a stumper but when I cant focus on the item, I sometimes just give up on it and others may as well. I hate to guess wrong on something because I cant clearly see it. Your pics are cropped ok but I think the lighting is the problem and also what the Professor said as well may help. I hope you dont take this the wrong way just trying to be helpful. :)

Thanks for at least trying with those new pics mrtuff
I'm still trying to get my head around the actual construction of the 'Whatsit?'
Is it like a flat sleeve, open only on 2 sides?
You mention a leather strap - is it likely that the leather strap ran through the sleeve and passed the roller?
What style/shape are the teeth on the roller? Does the roller turn freely?

It's certainly an interesting Whatsit :icon_sunny:
