Found this old pellet glass candy jar. Detector hit on it because of the metal decorative pieces made to look like a lantern. Research shows this Is from 1922. In the same hole, I found half a ceramic lid "broken" and some oyster shells...

That's a nice old relic I never used to collect glass until I started finding cool stuff like that.!!!!!! Well done

Welcome to tnet also Tommy

With ceramic and shells also in the hole it sounds like you were digging in an old garbage/bottle dump. I woulda ditched the detector and started digging a big hole!

I found it near and old stone hand built dam. I'm thinking someone may have had oysters for lunch and had a sweet tooth for some candy.

Congratualtions on the interesting jar! :icon_thumleft:

I love to see old glass bottles like that one,and there was enough metal around for your detector to respond on it.Super indeed.

Along the banks of creeks, ravines, rivers and other agriculturally useless land was where people used to dump their garbage, so while it's possible you were only digging a pile of picnic refuse I'd still bet that it is an old garbage dump, with many more bottles and other goodies hidden under the surface. I've found those lantern candy jars in 1920s deposits, which isn't a bad age to dig, and it's possible that even older and better layers are buried deeper. I am biased in favor of bottle digging versus metal detecting as I've always had better luck on an average day digging versus average day detecting, and have eyeballed some gold and over a pound of sterling mixed with the old dumped trash, which is always fun.
