I found this button today when playing with the deep hc program and xy screen on the deus 2… I thought a 1 piece domed button at first but now I’m wondering if it was a 2 piece and maybe the shank stuck through a slot… I cleaned it in the sink then went to dry it off and the shank broke off. The shank seems as deep as the dome but if it was a 2 piece maybe the back was concave. It’s brass but thin compared to a flat button… anyway its not the most exciting but it is unusual for around my house which most things seem to be from the 20’s and 30’s on up… this was much deeper than most finds and seems to be quite a bit older. Maybe you guys would know better than me if it’s older like I think or if it’s just an old coat button or something.

That's a nice one. I believe they are very, very early. Definitely a keeper.

I guess I should add Im in a Kansas farm house so unless it’s a drop from an Indian or a random trapper I’d think no earlier than 1850 roughly. Still would be much earlier than most things I find in the yard that seem to go back to the 20’s or so. Did they ever curl a one piece to add strength? Or is that a give away it was a 2 piece?

I will say it does have similar patina to civil war and earlier flat buttons I’ve found in the area
