Found this on a site that dates from the 1600's to present.
Found WW1 buttons in good condition, CW buttons with moderate crust, cleanable with ammonia and toothpick.
This one very thick crust, been in the ground a long time.
Tried ammonia soaking 2 times and toothpick. Got nowhere, it's like concrete.
I don't want to take a chance of ruining a good find, so I'd like to get an idea of what it is.
You can't see much by the pics, so I will try to describe it.
It is one piece button, 13/16 inches in diameter, 1/8 inch at edge, weight with crust 7 grams.
Has indented 5 point star with + in the middle, star looks to be surrounded by stars or dots.
Some gold gilding showing. Don't know if there's a backmark.
Thanks,Deep1

Maybe take a picture of it next to a coin for scale, also a pic of the back would be helpful.
Sorry, I can't help with the significance of the design on the front.

So, the size of a nickel, with a geometric design, and some gilt showing... I’d say it’s likely from the 1830’s-40’s, the “golden age” of gilt buttons. Seeing the construction of the back would help confirm that.

Found an old button once on Old Federal Road #1 just below Chief Van's house. It was gold!!! Had a caudacus on it. Searched the books about 3 years before a collector recognised it as a doctor's coat button from the Revoluionary War. Who can say how it got on that Civil War site! Anything can happen! Got enough out of it to get me a brand new Garrett Master Hunter 7 back then!!
