Found this last night don't want to clean it until I know what metal it is and how to clean it properly it's about the size of a dime unigue outer edge has a cross symbol above cross symbol is words written in a rectangular box last letters appear to read BEST or BUST lower right under cross seems to read 53 or 58 very thin diameter and shank on back is on outer edge of object any help in identifying would be appreciated on the back it appears to have a little blueish green corrosion so maybe copper brass pewter? image.jpgimage.jpg picture I think is upside down so to view it u have to look at it upside down(sorry)

It looks like it was probably a pin and not a button.... which means for dating purposes it doesn't have to be very old. That's also why the irregular shape.

Not sure. Assume it's probably copper, but if yours was also enameled it looks like most, if not all, has worn off, but sometimes corrosion can hide it. It you want to clean off all the corrosion and dirt a lemon juice soak with some brushing will do it. It's not an early relic so keeping some patina is not really a big deal, and I would clean it to see what's below. Worst case scenario is it's not real pretty but the detail is clear, but you may be surprised how it cleans up. Just impossible to know what to expect until it's done. From how it is now I don't think you are risking much.
