Congratulations on finding a 'flat button,' which was worn by civilians (and some of our Boys in Gray during the Civil War.) Your button was made in England circa early 1800's to 1830ish. The gold color you see is gold gilt.

If you want to know how to clean it, check out this post by Buckleboy. His methods are GREAT!

Your yard may have some interesting relics, and it might be worth your while to metal detect it or have it done. Sorry to hear about the hamster. Breezie

so do you know of anyone who collects these or would be interested in it as i think it would be a waste to just sit in a drawer gathering dust ?

The going price for these are about $1.00 each or less depending on the condition and style. More or less finding a flat button is an indication of other old relics and artifacts in that location. If I were you, I'd save it in case you find some other relics. More than one item denotes a collection! :laughing7: Besides, it would be a nice memory in lieu of the hamster. BUT, if you don't want it, I'll send you my snail mail address.

It's a pretty button for sure and I'll bet too there are more relics to be found in your yard.
