old button with letter D on one side , ITALY stamped on rear

i found this at my home in NH , it may be a button, has ITALY stamped on the rear and has the letter D or backwards D depending on how you look at it , it is not silver according to a source. It is copper in color pre cleaning but has a silver hue to it is about the size of a dime but is twice as thick . looking for help telling me what it is

the photo is not much better on the back but there is a center portion that is worn away, i assume where the button loop was, cant see the word italy either but it is there. here is the back of the button. it was found in Rochester NH
