My friend found this, so I dont have any clearer pics.
He is pretty much computer illiterate, so he asked me to
see if I could find out about a button he found in Pomona, CA.

Any ideas on 1. Age 2. Direct Unit of Service ( I suspect it's Navy or Marines, but can it be defined more?) 3. Value

I think the back mark says "Treble Gilt, Stand Col" (Maybe this is Standard Collar Co?)
I saw one reference to Treble Gilt as being Civil War Era.

Have fun!!

It looks like NA 88 in Albert's book. It probably dates to the early 1800s and it has a rarity factor of 10 according to Albert's.The backmark is Treble Gilt Standard col. The col is short for color or colour depending on which side of the Atlantic it was made on. Treble Gilt refers to the amount of gold gilt placed on the button. That is not a rare button but it is a good one. I have no idea of it's value.

Thanks Firefighter!
Can you explain rarity of 10?
Is that rare or not on a scale of 1-10?
Is 10 more rare or common?
Anyone else have an idea of value?
Just trying to get the most info I can before I report back to my buddy.
Type of Service ?
There must be some other button folks
out there since all you back east guys dig buttons all the time!
I appreciate all your help.
Thanks!

Albert's does not give a range. But, there is a CSA button listed with a rarity value of 125. Most CS buttons start in the 50 RV range and go up. The Navy buttons from the same period as your button range from 3 to 35. The lower the number the lower the rarity of the button.
