Re: Old Button ??

Dieu Et Mon Droit is the motto of the British Monarchy, which appears on a scroll beneath the shield of the coat of arms of the United Kingdom. The motto refers to the divine right of the Monarch to govern. For the Royal coat of arms of the Kingdom of England to have a French rather than English motto should not be considered unusual, given that English had only recently replaced French as the language of the English Royal Court and ruling class. Also appearing on the Royal arms is the Old French motto of the Order of the Garter, which appears on a representation of a garter as Honi Soit Qui mal Y Pense ("shame upon him who thinks evil of it").

Re: Old Button ??

Thank you for the information and links on the button, actually when I dug it up I thought I had my first gold coin, it was pack with dirt and I saw the back rim first.

Re: Old Button ??

It is a 'copy' (not sure) of a British Army General Service button. Design from 1902-present. I have never seen a shank like this one & I have found hundreds all '2' piece construction. So, I'm a little unsure if its an Army issue or Civilian copy :icon_scratch:

Re: Old Button ??

Isnt that a very old style drilled shank? Is that pot metal plated or brass?

It looks cheap chromed.

I based my date on the lion on crown, pre-1902 has Victoria's Crown & before that the other crowns minus the lion on top. So definately not pre-1902.

Re: Old Button ??

I agree with crusader... modern reproduction, old style design, the shank is a vintage replication. Button made in an antique brass finish with zero patina - it's not old.

It is NICE though... because buttons rock!

This shield is made by Waterbury even today but only in a two piece construction.

Re: Old Button ??

I'm getting convinced that it is a copy or a modern reproduction of some sort, I think it would of been identified by now if was real old. You never know, that's why I posted it, it had me going when I dug it up. I will say solved as a modern reproduction/copy. I definitely love digging up BUTTONS !! Thank you everyone for your replies.
