nbutton.webpfound at an old Long Island train Depot,,, I have found some old coins here in the past 1900s-1920s
looks to be copper,,,maybe a NYC police button? "copper"
I know some NY sports teams have "borrowed from them.."NY Yankees
 

Back, button is about 1 " dia... I have a feeling there may be writing under all that junk...

Waterbury made letter career uniform buttons. I also have a few. I dont know what they were used for but I would imagine they came in every letter of the alphabet.

the way the eye is on the back looks alot like the buttons from the 1800s.
I want to clean it better

I agree it could easily be late 1800's. Looks like the solder broke when the loop bent.
