hello all I was hoping to get an idea on how old this button is. unfortunately the backing is gone so i don't know who made it. the front has an eagle sitting on top of a shield 1 side of the shield has the stars and stripes the other looks like a sun shining over a mountain top underneath the shield it says excelsior and over the top there are 13 stars. pics to follow

thanks
dylan

Dylan,

I'm willing to say it's a NY button... this from a site I found with the eagle on a globe instead of a shield:

"NEW YORK MILITIA CUFF BUTTON, NY30

These buttons have the eagle on a globe and shield device with 13 stars above, and the motto EXCELSIOR below. This button is known with the backmark of practically every button maker and outfitter of the period, as well as many quality marks. This is an excellent button for the beginning collector to specialize in as nearly 50 different specimens are known. All buttons have attached shanks. A variety of backmarks are represented... "

I agree: New York state seal (police) button.

I'm always a little late...

Found this also:

SC 14009 - This is a pretty Federal New York state button. It has some of the original finish remaining, Extra Quality backmark. This coat size example was dug in central Virginia. *$29.99

thanks jim, pbk jim your picture is it. of course the 1 my dad found isn't as pretty. It is the second civil war button found at a site we have both detected. I found a ny naval button. I going to research the house where they were found to see who lived there during the civil war and where they may have served. something to do with all the snow on the ground. Again my thanks

Nice work, Jim and Ken! Guess I should have read Dylan's description of the button a bit more carefully. ::) That's what I get for skipping nap time!
