old buckle

Found this buckle recently at the beach. Can anyone identify what it may be for and how old?

It is brass and about 1-inch long.

Swimming buckle to old timey swim suit?

Definitly for tightening a pull strap. Old style bathing/swimming caps had straps. Seems a little big but maybe?

Could it be civil war? The area it was found there were CSA troops at one point. The hole in the middle is not typical.
