Hi - I'm new here :-)

Here's a pretty corroded coin that I'm curious about. I'm tempted to try an electrolysis treatment on it (I watched a few YouTube videos, and it seems like it is pretty easy).

Thanks in advance for any help identifying it! It's slightly larger than a modern quarter, I've also found a coin in similar condition (with very similar details left) that is slightly smaller than a modern quarter.

Welcome. It's a George I halfpenny or farthing depending on the size. Electrolysis won't help. It's too far gone. I now only use the Andre's pencils to mechanically clean any coin. Toothpics work also but take longer.

Welcome from Texas

Agree with smokey, use Manual cleaning to prevent further damage/decay.

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard bingbingbing! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

It is actually a King George the second halfpenny or farthing. King George the first faces right not left and you can see the roman numerals 2 on the top right of the obverse.
1727-1760
Nice Find!

I agree with what nkellum22 said. It might be corroded, but it's still a great coin to find. Congrats!

Welcome to Tnet from Toronto BBB. :hello:

Even in that condition, finding a 278 year old coin is a good find! :notworthy:
It's even better now that you have an I.D. on it.

I actually found same coin from Finland during this season, like said, it is George II coin from 18th century. Mine was even worse condition than yours 😁
