Calvary spurs did have "rowel" or "little wheel on the end"; such as this picture:

Western spurs would more generally have the spikes on the rowel:

(Duggap, he was referring to the disc on the end of the spurs :thumbsup:)
However, there are plenty examples of Calvary spurs with spikes

any ideal of the time period.i also found a naval button from the 1790-1800 period in the same location.war of 1812?

Could very easily be, the timeframe is about right.
Maybe it was a confederate, say from Virginia that was killed and a soldier stole his boots but had no use for the spurs so he threw them aside; right about the time a horse stepped on them which bent them. Makes a mind wonder what that spur would say it saw if it could talk- very cool.
