Went back to the site I dug my cannonball and CSA button. The day was kind of slow. Did manage to get anther 3" cannonball and several musketballs. Also dug this Brass Boot spur. I'm no expert on Boot Spurs, but was wondering if anyone could give me some info on this one, such as age or type.
I cant help but think that this was worn by a confederate soldier who was in charge of moving the cannons to this site via horseback. Maybe that's just my imagination running wild. Could this spur be 1860s era?
BTW there were no known battles in this area. This most likely was a defensive position.
The brass measures 2.97" wide at its widest point, not including the rusty tabs., and about 4.10" long.
Just thought this was pretty neat, and was wondering if anyone could share some info.
Thanks
This was from Saturday. Would have posted sooner, but my old pc crashed and I had to go buy a new one.

My guess... right from rip...
1850's.
Looks like "sand cast" ... hard to tell from here.

Thanks for responding AARC. Right from the rip? Right from the Grave?
The reason I say brass is before I oiled, it was greenish, and I guess I nicked it and saw shiny brass.
Any ideas on cleaning, or should I leave it as is.
I think it would look good in a civil war display, if it is CW era.

I think it was supposed to be from the hip. It looks plenty clean enough to me. Nice find

Crouch had one somewhat similar to yours in his book. He called it a civilian spur. But as we all know, the boys took a lot of personal items to the war, particularly in the south. Since you are finding civil war artifacts where you dug that, I would say it was lost by a soldier. Neat find, not a common type spur.
