I spent half an hour or so tonight searching an old ball diamond with my Fisher Goldbug. I realize it's not the detector of choice for searching trashy areas.

My question is - I found a few very old bottle caps (in addition to various indescribable junk). No coins, not even clad.

Is finding the old caps a sign that the field may not have have been searched before?

Old bottle caps get ignored by many due to their iron content,
so no it doesn't necessarily mean you have an unsearched area.
just not a properly searched area.
A few silver quarters in a row could mean unsearched :laughing7:
But rusted bottle caps do mean there is a chance of Silver coins & wheats,
Indians, V & Buffalo nickels

Good Luck

F.Y.I.: history of crown top bottle caps

Crown tops, were patented in the United States in 1892.
however It was 1900 before the steel crown cap was ever used.
crown caps originally had cork or rubber under them.
but mainly cork.
Cork was stopped somewhere around 1970, as being unsanitary, and it's been plastic liner ever since.
Since Plastic lasts longer then Cork in the ground,
if your finding rusted caps without a liner,
your chances are better, they are most likely pre 1970

You won't know until you dig everything up.. Good luck.

Great info here bud jusy keep digging u will never know till u dig it, like u said its really not a good choice of machine for a trashy área like, that but can b done good luck to u

The more caps you get out to the ground, the better chance you have of finding some goodies....if there are caps everywhere, Im sure they are masking good targets...Keep at it!

They are rusty caps, so that's good news. That the junk is masking good targets is a good point as well. I've looked up in the forums how to hunt ball fields and I'll keep digging.
