What does the back look like? Many times there is more information on the back to help ID something than there is on the front.

I think I've already replied to this exact find once.  Did Goes4Ever dig it up?  I don't think you'll get an exact ID on this one--but maybe someone will come along and prove me wrong.

I'm still sticking to my guns on this one. Ladies' buckle. Sash or belt. Too big for shoe buckle. And too new. Late Victorian is my guess, but perhaps earlier due to its resemblance to a carbine sling buckle.

If I understand show buckles, most of them are curved to fit the contour of the shoe. I also appears that it may be hand-made with the adornment placed on it. Maybe the "marriage" of two pieces by a craftsman who needed/wanted or had an order for a buckle.

Nice find and interesting to investigate.

If it were really old 17th or 18th century, I would expect the iron pins to have rusted more and possible let the tongue fall off.
