This is a re-post with better photos of an item found in Central Mass along a river bank near an old textile mill. Does anyone have a clue? Thank you.

interesting

the front pic is very clear and looks eerily familiar

the back pic is off focus a litte. Are there any markings at all on the backside?

You could purchase these badges blank and at first I thought it was a crude engraving but when I clicked on to enlarge I see that it looks very professional.

I wonder if that is supposed to represent skull and crossbones or a propellor?

The back is smooth. Item is very thin and old.....Its definitely handmade and rather crude. Some of the locals think it must have been some sort of secret society which is best explanation I have heard. Skull and cross bones for sure in my opinion. Thanks for your input!

The head on that piece looks like it is masked, as if tied with a kerchief or a bag with holes cut for eyes. We see that in historical accounts here in the Ozarks regarding the flour-sack masks of the "Baldknobbers," a vigilante group that prowled these hills after the civil war. Food for thought? It sure looks like your medallion was a key fob, as there appear to be broken spurs on the top edge where a loop may have been at one time. Very cool item....Sub

WOW!! No one has speculated as to that possibility! Great insight! I'm numb. I found this in a town with an underground railroad presence prior to the CW. Many slaves were here on their way to Canada. Not every Yankee in this area was too happy with the situation. Food for thought???!! Oh yeah. Thanks Sub!

Have you figured out what your find is? I found this one today and searched through google images and found something similar that was labeled as a WWI watch fob.
