Nice find, how deep was it?

it was on a Scraped Lot, and about 3 inches...Only reason I dig everything is because it was a 1870's house teardown.

Thanks for that Link!, That was awesome!, I never realized there was a passion for finding these

Would the blade be offset a little? If it is, you have a broad hatchet.

Wow!, after I read this i went and looked, and it was offset some, i noticed that when i found it, but figured it was used more on one side or something ( I know that doesn't make sense)

thanks for all the info...Im guess its maybe 19th Century?

So, only one side of your broad hatchet is ground with an edge?

If so, it is a broad axe for hewing a log into a square shape.

Ever heard the term "hand hewn logs", especially in reference to a log cabin or old barn? Your broad axe would have been one of the tools used for that application.

A broad axe meant for hewing will never chop down a tree. Okay, it might chop down a tree, but it is going to take a month of Sundays to do it. The single sided edge just doesn't have the cutting power that a double edged axe has. Sadly, over the years, I've seen a good number of broad axes foolishly ground on the back side by someone who doesn't know any better, thus ruining the broad ax.
