I live in the ne georgia mountains near mt yonah. I was out digging for gold in a hardpack stream bed that was dried up and about 2 feet down i found this axe head it apears to be 100 percent iron can anyone tell me anything about how old and any history on it NVE00206.pngNVE00186.pngNVE00190.png

The thing the amazes me is that people put stories and ages on objects like this from shape, when the fact is they were made by Blacksmiths who could make it any shape they wished?Do people really think that the Blacksmith's were restricted to a particular shape during a specific time?
You ax head has the shape of the many I dig in 1850- sites

That is true Kuger, the shape of a axe headh is more regional then age. The styles are more interesting, that can be traced sometimes. Its fun to see the different styles. Age is very hard, H--k I can make a primitve head tomorrow. : )

Certainly worth cleaning up and checking for a makers mark, I don't think you'd hurt it any. Welcome to TreasureNet!

I think the previous posts are on the mark. The dept of the find is more an indicator of the age , but in this case it is tricky because it is a stream bed. The blacksmith made axes are forge welded from two peaces of iron. Some blacksmiths were better at it than others. I found mine at a 200 year old yard in Maryland. It as app. 10" deep. I conserved it and mounted it.
