Old and odd stamp or seal maker from the 1700's I think.

I need help with this item. I found it metal detecting about 4 years ago in Pennsylvania. There is a fort from the French and Indian War near by. It's 1 3/4" across by approx 1/2 " It's solid brass or bronze and also the front rim or border is flush with the figure. That indicates its a stamp/die/mark of some sort. The local castle is of no help. I dug it in Brownsville Pa, near the Nemacolon Castle that was known as Fort Burd in the 1700's. Since it is on the Mon river many people passed through there on their journey west. The castle is of no help because its basically only a tour site and used for spooky tours during the Halloween season. Any help is much appreciated and I will keep you guys informed if I find out anything. Any help would be much appreciated. The image is from a scanner and it doesn't really show the detail very well.

Its been some time since I wanted to try again to identify this item. After visiting the boards for the last couple days I decided to give it another try.

Can we see a side view with a camera? Could it be a button? Did you say it 1/2 inches thick solid brass/bronze?

It looks like a typical fashion style used on buttons.

Looks like a man sitting on fence but I havent found the exact match.

But if its 1/2 inch thick, it may not be a button but made in the same style.

Did you put ink on it to stamp it or push it into wax?

Re: Old and odd stamp or seal maker from the 1700's I think.

Sorry I don't have better photo's. It is roughly 1/2" I think. Round edges and the back is rounded and was smooth but now corroded. There is no indication that a post or shaft went into the back for it to be a knob. I am not sure as to the metallic composition. I scratched the back and it looks silverish and it is really heavy, so it could be painted lead maybe. I did press it to a piece of paper and it makes a nice impression. There is allot of detail that you cannot see in the photo. The figure is raised as is the round border. When pressed to a piece of paper it is a circle with the figure, fence, and grass. I have contacted a person from colonial Williamsburg at the museum to see if it could be connected to the term "fence sitter" from Paines work "Common Sense" from the Revolutionary War. There are not makers marks that I can tell so I resorted to looking into the symbolism of the art depicted. Grasping at anything to tell your the truth. All of your input is welcomed and appreciated.

Here is a link to a antique forum that I posted about it a couple years ago. If you are interested you can read other people's opinions. I don't know if it will ever be identified to a sure thing.

Here I tried this with a looking glass. Not sure if it will help but could you give me your opinion on if its painted lead? Its real heavy but why if it is a stamp make it out of lead? Wouldnt it bend when pressed or hammered?

It's Wee Willy Winkie. He has the stocking cap, the square type lantern in his right hand, and he is running through the town (with the fence in the background.)

One of the better TN IDs. :hello2: Nothing out of the ordinary for IS. Definitely sitting on a fence. I wonder how old it is?
