Hi;

I found this item quite a long time ago in a small spot in SC Lowcountry where the only thing dug was very early stuff, IE pewter flat button with raised 52 in center, pewter flat with indented 71, several plain pewter flats, some pewter flats with cross hex design, george coppers etc. Nothing newer. As you can see this was a part of something with a small window, and on the left side was a hinge for a pin of some sort. The design looks like a winged angel/arch angel holding a large sickle with an owl near it's back. Right above the small window is a rooster perched on an hourglass. Below the window and in front of the angel's knees is a globe. Inside/on the back side, is a peg in the center like something was mounted inside.

The item measures about 3/4" across.

Ideas.

I was thinking some kind of watch fob that doubles as a calendar with the date or month showing through the little square window ? Just a wild guess. In any case I think it had a disc that turned inside it allowing something to show through the square hole. You can see the remains of the center "post" on the back

Thats a possibility its a fob made by elgins father time.jpg and the round piece missing from the

back turned for the date like NH Bandit said but something else was connected at the

hinges and I dont think it was a watch band. :dontknow:

Pics of the buttons found with it.

Hi Everyone. Appreciate the interest in my find. Wanted to post pics of the buttons that were found with the item in question. As you can see they are all pewter. We did not find any brass buttons at this site. The bottom two are the 71 and 52 I mentioned earlier. Forgot to mention one of them (3 oclock) has a crown near the top with the letters RP at the bottom. The buttons are in rough shape but I understand pewter does not hold up very well even in South Carolina soil. The brass item is something broke off of something else. It has the letters D and then a down arrow and then a S with a flower design below. It is very thick brass. I don't have the coins as my partner found those but I found the numbered and lettered buttons where his were all plain. We only found a couple of .69 round ball drops in the site. I notice that Elgin did not come about until late 1864 and wonder if that fits the time frame of these relics, unless these relics were worn as civilian clothes for later period loss? I will still pursue trying to contact someone at Elgin to see if they have anything.
