It’s been quite a while since I last posted, but I have been wanting to get back on and this gave me a great opportunity. I bought this hat a flea market yesterday, and I really have nothing on it. The guy I bought it from said it was a Tibetan monks hat, but through my research, I don’t think he was right. it’s highly decorated, with two types of fabric. The purple has dragon motifs on it, and the second has flora/geometric pattern. There are also what I think are dragon motifs in a gold colored kind of ribbon on the top. It is padded, and made to stay warm with ear flaps. On the edges you can see some of what it is padded with on the inside, and it is a material kind of like bailing twine. The person who had this before had not stored this well, having it folding and just lying flat, so I am trying to get it back to its original shape. Any info you have on this will be very much appreciated!

Looks like something a Sherpa guide would wear. Often talisman figures were incorporated for protection. Dragons were quite popular. Dragons worked both ways: if found on trails they were to ward off tresspassers, if worn on clothes, they were to scare the enemy.

Seen hats like this in the tourist markets 30 yrs ago.
Made for sale to travellers instead of a local, one just has to look at the stitching along the side in the first photo.
Many were made from scraps that were left over form other manufacturing (clothing) as the scraps got smaller the items did as well. Right down to little ring/jewelry bags.

Interesting idea. The thing with dragons is interesting.
