Old 1700's house produces Military button with 1794 on it.........

Hit the old house ive been doing. It was built in the mid 1700's. I got the assorted garbage and about an hr in i get a solid hit between coin range and junk. B/c i dug some military buttons there in the past i got optumistic. I dug down and there is a button that has some letters on it. I cant make them out at the time, then i look on the border and see the 13 stars all around.
Button has no shank and is not a flat button however, but rather a bubble like button. It cleaned up pretty well and i can make out a cross on top and the some cursive letters. looks to be either FAC, FAD, EAD, i cant really tell. I was hoping someone could. The cool part is under the letters it says 1794. The backmark is United States Button Co.
Any info on the button would be awesome.

Re: Old 1700's house produces Military button with 1794 on it.........

The letters are "EAC." It's a uniform button from the Episcopal Academy of Cheshire, located in Cheshire, Connecticut.
1794 is a commemorative date, marking the founding of the school.
The button itself reportedly dates from around 1865.
A few of these appeared in a recent buttons price list at $20-22.

What are little sisters for. I use my phone for pics so it makes it come out clearer if someone holds the object for me. This time my little sis was the helping hand...

Invest in some Aluminum Jelly for buttons like that that still have gold gilding--it will clean them Excellently. (And it'll preserve more of the gilding, too!)

Check out my post in Cleaning and Preservation--more tips there.

GREAT find.
