Makes you wonder if it is not a privately made medal, made on the frontier to commemorate something.

I agree: it's probably a unique item whose portrait subject and significance are now long lost to time. The reverse resembles a Masonic emblem— not precisely, but then the obverse probably wasn't (at least, one hopes) too faithful or flattering a likeness either.

Whatever it is... I like it!

The high collar shirt on the man might indicate 1840's - 50's. That style was popular then.

Kinda has an East India feel to me.

Thanks to all. Found this at an 1880-1900 trash dump in Denver, that is now a skate park. Brought it to the Denver History Museum, they thought it might be either military, political, or something given to Indians. In short, they didn't know. This one has always stumped me, looks like it was made to be a medallion. I agree with the frontier idea, has just enough of a military feel to it. Or Britney, before all that horrible marriage problems that she has been having.
Still have my shovel?

Neat nickels. Haven't crossed them off my to-find list, as well as never having dug a love token.

HH,

I was thinking Mr. Magoo, but not Doctor Evel.
