Okay forum. What kind of silver looking rock is this?

It looks like a single mineral in composition.

But the pictures are not in prime light.

And the given geologic setting would be great to know, like the pieces were picked from a mineral vein: such as a vein in limestone with noticeable evidence of high temperature alteration of minerals associated with the vein.

The pictures appear to show the mineral does not have any specific clevage. The pictures show the mineral is dark with a silverish sheen.

Are you suggesting day light pictures? I have had this piece for many years. I cannot recall where it had come from.

I think that was the request! Based on the current pics, I believe that it may be Hematite but better pics taken in natural light without too much glare, may help to confirm it.

It's it's really silver in color (and not really black like in the photo.) then I'd say it's silicon. But you also mention it is hard whereas silicon is rather brittle.
