Thought it was slag, or just trash, till my wife took a closer look and saw some details.

Seems that this is an image of a woman... what we see is the front of a womans legs, like in a dress. Her shins are exposed, and the back side appears to have a flowing dress. her feet are gone, as is her torso and head. Seems to be an art-deco design, as there is evidence of a base. A finial of some sort? It is pock-marked from being in the turf for a while, my best guess is that it is brass.

Any clue what this could be?... thx..BWD

I'm probably wrong but I think you have a piece of a vintage hood ornament. Does it look like it might have been plated at one time?

That could be.. I picture the wind blowing, and her dress is flowing behind... the size of the piece bothers me though... I think it would be too small to be a hood ornament...... interesting
Doesn't seem to have been plated.

Could you take a couple of photos from other angles? Interested in another angle on the circled end. Thanks!

Yeah, 1950ish Pontiac hood ornament. Nope, not Pontiac, I've seen the ornament somewhere, she had wings, and I thought it was on a Pontiac I once owned. But I remember now that was an Indian chief head, can't remember what car I saw it on, might have been on an early radiator cap.

I was thinking radiator cap myself, but I've looked at three or four hundred pictures and can't find a match.

I'm leaning towards old trophy as well, the reoccuring theme I'm seeing with hood ornaments is the absence of feet, same goes with tankard handles.

I agree with Matt's thinking that it looks like pot metal, based on the pitting. It reminds me of a small lever, like the size of a latch lever from a 1950's car/truck vent window (the little triangular windows). I think the deco lines of it are just decorative lines, rather than a dress. I think it twisted before breaking, which makes the overall shape look like might be have been a figure, rather than just styling lines.

I think the first thing to do is determine the type of metal.

Lead and pewter melt with soldering iron.
Silver reduces in redox pan. Determine the metal and go from there. Let me know if you want help. Last time I helped Diggin he found 500 year old silver, lol.
