Ok, whos MAN enough to go hunt today?

Re: Ok, who's MAN enough to go hunt today?

Looking back now, those cold mornings out hunting didn't seem that bad, did they? Just looking out the window makes me cold. The most I'll do outside today is start the cars a few times.

It's gonna be a lonnnggggg Winter.

Perhaps, perhaps not. I was ice fishing last year, then ma nature decides to send heat, back to metal detecting and then back to tundra conditions and ice fishing. I think we were around 20 degrees on January 1st, then around 60 on January 7th. Welcome to the party pal!

BTW, Winter is just 1 day old now - daylight start getting longer after today

Re: Ok, who's MAN enough to go hunt today?

Hmm... I might be man enough to go do some last minute shopping today! Does that count??? LOL.

Yeah it's eFfingham cold out there today. I need to break down my ACE 250 and get it put back in the box because it's SOLD!

What's wrong with this picture? We're getting more time to hunt each day and each day the ground freezes more! Ahh the cruelty of nature! :(

Re: Ok, who's MAN enough to go hunt today?

No one going to the sledding hills today?!? Got some roast beef and cheese and gonna watch some football I'spose.

Maybe not today or tomorrow (I have family events to attend), but perhaps Tuesday/Wednesday if I have all of my shopping done.

Re: Ok, who's MAN enough to go hunt today?

Go get 'em Brett.
I think that minus sign in front of the number on thermometer has done it's job in discouraging much md'ing today though.

Re: Ok, who's MAN enough to go hunt today?

I thought about it this morning. Yesterday it was in the low 40s and this morning the sun was shining brightly around 8:AM. So, I thought it would be a perfect day to go digging. I stepped outside to get the newspapwer with just my jamas on and dang! I nearly froze my gernals off from the door to the driveway and back! I checked the local weather channel and it was 7 degrees! It's about 1:00 PM here now and has warmed up to a balmy 19! I can't remember it being this cold here in the last 3 or 4 years. Darn Global warming anyway! M ::) nty

Re: Ok, who's MAN enough to go hunt today?

F-CK this cold weather.

I hosted a big party last night and didn't get to bed until about 3:30. I got up to do some Xmas shopping and my car was stuck in what was snow yesterday but turned to rock-hard ice this morning. I had to dig the car out and froze my ass off. It was the coldest I felt in a long time. The wind had to be blowing 30 MPH, in below zero temps. All I could do was mumble expletives to myself and keep reminding myself that it could be worse, which in reality, probably couldn't have been.

So no, no detecting today. Just reading about people in Texas and Florida and Cali.

Re: Ok, who's MAN enough to go hunt today?

Hi Yall!!! I saw the temps up there and almost shyte myself. -6 with -30 windchill. HOLY CRAP I am glad I am home in Texas. I went out yesterday to a park in Center Texas. I didnt know how old it was but I figured it out pretty quick. Got some clad mostly in the 70s. I didnt stay around long. I hope to get out tomorrow and hit a school from the 1890s. If I get anything I will let ya know. I wonder if GOIO and McEtrac got out today. You guys stay warm. SMAN...

Re: Ok, who's MAN enough to go hunt today?

Well I got just about all of my xmas shopping done. Holy frozen turds was it cold out there! I had a birthday party to go to today and it was NASTY out as well, but tonight was far worse!

If it's anywhere close to these temps and these wind speeds... MD'ing can wait. I'm not in that big of a hurry to grab some quarters under the snow.

I will wait until it warms up and starts to melt the snow. In years past in CCFP I've been kicked out of the sledding hills for digging snow to make a jump and I was threatened with a fine. I bet you would get kickout for detecting too. As and I quote: "it would ruin the sledding for everybody"...

If you guys do go out and mess with the sledding hills, just remember that I told you so... ;D

Re: Ok, who's MAN enough to go hunt today?

It does kind of screw up the ground... especially if the snow is icy.

Please post your finds and stories as you will probably be the only one posting any finds on the Illinois page for at least the next week few weeks given the amount of snow we have and will be getting!

Re: Ok, who's MAN enough to go hunt today?

Wow, the one place I know people are glad to see me, since almost everyone loses something on a sledding hill. Never had anyone challenge me detecting there. But I'm not digging past surface and will almost exclusively work the distant bottom of the run, where people end up and get to shake the snow off and out of their---gloves--- yeehaw.

At the bottom of the hill in most of the parks there's a flat area that has solid ice about 4 to 10 inches thick. Rings, coins, keys, etc. will sink into the ice to various depths. Get a signal, brush away the snow and you will usually see the target suspended in the ice under your coil. Then pick it out. I use a Estwing rock pick, very quick indeed.

No way would I have got out Sunday ..........high of 4*................Mondays forecast 2*-8*...I even called off Monday cause I promised myself not to ever work in temps of 5* or lower.....(Since in an accident 20 years ago ) {I got hit in the hands with a sledge hammer...........Holding a rebar marking stake.........It was high of 5* that day with w/chill less than- 30*........{smashed fingers ,and thumb}...(Very painful at those temps )
It is supposed to hit 40* this weekend, but lows still promise to be in the teens to low 20's.
Aren't you glad you are not here ?
Hope you find a bunch down there ,and have a Happy Holiday with the Family, Dave

I heard it was grueling up there. Trying to work in that temp outside is nuts especially if the wind chill is in the minus column. I did get out today for an hour at an old community center in a community near here. It was trashy. Worse than Washington Park. I only got some clad but tomorrow its gonna be about 70 degrees and I am going to an old school I found after going to the geochaching website. I am hoping for a few good coins there. I also found a civil war cemetary in the woods. It is way off the beaten path. I am going to check it out this coming week and see what it looks like. My father in law told me about it and that its fenced so anything around it is fair game as far as I am concerned. I will definitely be in relic mode, especially if I see that its a Texas Civil War Site. Wish me luck. If I get anything good I will let ya know. I hope everyone stays warm and enjoyed the Christmas. SMAN...

Re: Ok, who's MAN enough to go hunt today?

Hey, I got out yesterday with a stiff 30 mph wind and a wind chill of 10 ::)

Re: Ok, who's MAN enough to go hunt today?

Hey CJ Ron, got those conditions around here today. A bit too chilly for me to stay out for long. But when Fiend did this post originally it was just pre-Christmas when we had that cold spell. I'm sure it got over to your way around then also. Wind chill down around 25 below, temps from 0 to -8 or so for a couple days.
