Re: Ok What the heck are these things?

Well, for what its worth, I read the patent date on the "Hook-Fast" item as January 29, 1924. This pre-dates the Hook-Fast company that currently makes badges for police and fire officers, but by just a few years. They also had a "Hook-Fast Can't-Slip" buckle... but again, not until a few years later.

Re: Ok What the heck are these things?

The first 2 items are the lids from different brands of salt shakers. The way their edges are shaped, I'd say they were caps for containers made of cardboard with pressed-on caps. You can usually tell salt shakers from pepper shakers because pepper shakers have fewer holes.

But, of course, you KNEW that already. ;D

Re: Ok What the heck are these things?

If indeed the first two pics are the tops off salt shakers and they sure look like it, why would you dip it in water and wipe dry??? Wouldn't that ruin the salt and cardboard container ???

Re: Ok What the heck are these things?

The silver thing looks like it might be a jar lid off a ladies' vanity set from the turn-of-the-century or so...

The brass piece with the arrow shaped hook in the center, right below the salt shaker top in the photo of everything, sure as heck looks like a keeper from a two-piece buckle!

I don't know what kind it could be--I haven't seen a keeper like that before...

Re: Ok What the heck are these things?

OK PBK but I thought for sure you would be able to help me out with the Hook thing with a Patent number on it! :'( :-\

Buckleboy, the area I was hunting in was in a yard where Civil War activity took place. We have found an Eagle button and a couple of three ringers there, I'm "thinking" Civil War on the buckle parts. But then again they could have been dropped yesterday.

Re: Ok What the heck are these things?

based on what I can see of pictures 2 &3 the item appears to be a plane iron. attached is a picture of a modern one.

it could be from a "thumb Plane" they get pretty small.
"""The thumb plane measures 1 11/16" wide, 5 1/2" long (sole length of which the rear "lip" extends 5/16" out from the rear of the plane body). The iron is 1 1/2" wide. The adjuster is 40 tpi making it very sensitive (same as a micrometer thread). The body is made of navel brass and the sole is of coarse steel. The wood infill, wedge and bun is Kingswood. The plane weighs 1.5 lbs. It certainly has "authority" when planing nasty grain"""

Hope I didn't misread and an ID was made, but the hookfast thingy is a belt buckle receiver, this piece was attatched to the belt with a rivet(notice the small hole on one end ,the the buckle of choice goes on other end of belt with the wholes buckle catch went thru belt hole and then latched into the receiver

So how can someone search the patent records on something? Is there a way to do it over the web or do you have to go somewhere and do it? :icon_scratch:

google us patent office...enter the pattern number.

i think it is a knapsack buckle. the upper strap hangers.
i saw a pack with similar hangers at an auction a few weeks ago. the pack i saw was for a radio or other equipment.
