Ok to use a Lithium ion battery pack on an XLT detector?

Hi all,

I just bought an XLT metal detector that takes regular AA batteries, and i want to buy a 2.8ah or 4.8 ah lithium ion pack from ebay as it would be more practical, and integrate it into the standard pack.
12V/4800mAH Portable Li-ion Rechargeable Battery+USB-UK SELLER--FREE DELIVERY | eBay

i know quite alot about electronics and batteries, are there any considerable dangers i should watch out for, if the battery is always in range from 12.6 to 10.0 ?

thanks!

Yea, there's a big problem. White's are set up to run on 2200mAH, not 2400 or 4800. The best I've found, bought, and use is R&B Innovations AW2200 from New England Detectors. I've had mine since they came out and consider it the best investment I've put in my detector.:icon_thumleft:

Ok lets be knowledgeable, mah is the value of the capacity of the battery, so nothing will happen if you put 1000mah or 10.000 mah battery the only difference is that it will last 10 times more. Now if the voltage is correct there is no problem in installing a lipo battery in the battery box ( I plan to do the same) there is just one thing you have to be VERY careful, if using lipo ( lithium polymer) you can't discharge the battery under a certain voltage or you can risk the battery to actually explode. Now there are a few ways to avoid this, one is to buy a low voltage alarm, a small circuit board that could be easily adapted to fit in the battery compartment. Second is to check the voltage on your screen and turn the machine off once it reaches 9 volts (or 3 volts per cell)...

I hate Lipo's because of problems with many airlines and cruise ship companies and as Norbyx says there are dangers. I see that Apple is now saying that use of their products in temperatures above 95 degrees F. damages the capacity of the cells and charging above that temperature causes even more problems so where you live or may be detecting could be a worry. Its always interesting to check the temperature in the trunk of a car when your down in Arizona, Australia etc they can be beyond belief.

You can get the AW-2200 Batt Pack and Charger for 134.95 at http://rnb-innovations.com or Kellyco

Our Batt Packs are Not Lithium-Poly -- they are Lithium-ion the same batteries used in your Cell Phone Laptops and 95% all your power tools you buy at Home Depot
lowes and Walmart......They are safe.....

Thanks all for your advice! i hadn't considered the lithium exploding! indeed they used to sometimes do that in laptops and mobiles... i dont know if which kind i have, if its li cr or lifepo or lipo or li a different metal, there are so many lithium batteries... i built some electric vehicles previouslyl although i know the voltage level that the electronics take,a nd here i wasnt sure...

I took the plunge and invested in a 25 usd 12v rechargeable lithium battery of unknown quality. 2800 AH, same as duracell batteries. id prefer not too much of a high discharge, if you can see sparks when you touch electrodes thats OTT for a detector !

anyways... plugged it in after measuring it, the voltage comes up as 12.2 for the first 10 minutes, then it goes to 11.8 and slowly dips to prbably 11v, and at that point i presume the lithium battery has a LVC low voltage controller and a BMS battery monitoring system... i attched it to the plus and minus in the batter box and use that as intermediary, it works like a dream, i may soon place the battery inside the battery box.

What can i say... 150 pound battered metal detector, excellent rechargeable battery, using the battery taped on the back for now, if it doesnt malfunction to begin with good, like that i monitor the temperature. hot is bad.!!!

first 2 days, found 5 coins, 3 1950's toy guns, 2 toy cars, 2 compasses, 1 art deco copper matchbox, 1 half worn horseshoe, 1950s shampoo tubes, bottle tops and bits of wires. clock mechanism, and others.!!! fun! i want the tresures! nice hobby!

Well RNB its not what you think but the cruise ships and airlines. Go into any detector shop that stocks the Whites TDI and you will see a big sticker warning that the detectors Lithium Ion batteries are forbidden in passenger aircraft. Small lithiums as used in phones are excluded from the regulations on size/power grounds. Home use anyone can do what they like but travelling overseas can be very different.

Thanks for the warning, the way around that is to post it to the the hotel/addy where you are going on holiday a week prior to going.

A thing i am wondering nowdays, is whether the XLT performance is way better running at a solid 12v with high C rating, i think it is running on max performance/depth all the time. i read some things about changing the discrimination on xlt to make it go deeper but i havent figured it out that clearly. ... i think the 2800ah lithium can definately put out higher amps than most AA batteries. its smaller than a cigarette box.

Just like the sealed Batt Packs Used in your Cell Phone and Laptops the Airlines and Cruise Ships will also Allow RNB Batt Packs Because they are Sealed.

The Whites TDI Pro are not Sealed Battery Packs....

But we do have Batt Packs for the TDI SL
