Augustus AE As, Mint of Lugdunum, after 10 B.C.
26.5 mm, 10.74 gm
Obv: CAESAR PONT MAX. Laureate head right.
Rx: ROM ET AVG. grand altar of Lugdunum with many ornaments
The counterstamp was an official stamp used for various Legions (can you see the no.s on the stamp?). The counterstamp makes it more interesting & collectable.
However, I can't tell well enough from the photo if it real or a copy.

Wow! I thought for sure it would take a while to id this one. you guys are GOOD! I used 18X magnification, and can't determine any numbers in the stamp. something is there, but the dirt and age make it difficult. how do we tell if it is real? I weighed it and it came in at 10.9 grams.

Ok, it does not have any mold lines on the edge. as a matter of fact the edge is not very uniform at all (not perfectly flat or round). I myself didn't dig it, so not sure where it originally came from (bought from someone). and it is either copper or bronze in material (with green patina as an extra bonus)

OK, based on what you said & as its a 'relatively' common type, I'm happy to say real
CRUSADER said:I'm pretty sure I can see a 'V' in the counterstamp & maybe a 'I' before, ie IV Legion which would make it one of the following:
Legio IV Italica
Legio IV Macedonica
Legio IV Martia
Legio IV Scythica
However, I'm not that familar with counterstamps, as I have found none in the 7000 or so I have dug.
Worth doing more research for the stamp.

hmmm, unfortunately there is dirt encrusted in that recess and I know not to clean coins, so it will be hard to figure out. does it read from the center out? or from the edge in?
