Ok found in Newburgh NY under roots of big tree cut down help

Found underneath a big tree I removed this was in the roots. next to an old house from what had a plaque on it dated 1865 history of the road and history of the area shows three homestead in that area where the early to mid-1800s it is not magnetic it was hit with a chainsaw and has a W on our and M on it. I was thinking it was part of a cross any ideas would be appreciated help me figure out what this is.
