with finding the buffalo nickel yesterday I almost forgot about this little guy, what is it? It rang up under the gold/foil area on my Ace 250
I tried to take pictures of it from all sides, penny is for size comparison. If I did not have a pinpointer I would have NEVER located this, that is for sure!!!
It is hard, and it definately is not foil, and it is gold in color.

Ok what is it, anyway possible it IS gold? I doubt it but I had to ask. I am impressed the Ace 250 found this with it being so SMALL!

Looks like gold to me. You could take it to a local jeweler and have them perform an acid test on it to make sure.

How heavy is it? If it's gold, it'll feel a bit heavier than it looks. Even something that size will feel 2 or 3 times as heavy.

The guy who used to work on my car sometimes, is a GPAA member. He was telling me once how him and a buddy went on gold prospecting trips to Ohio. They knew of a couple places just great for dredging gold. If you were detecting in Ohio, it is possible you found a nice gold nugget.

You're quite welcome! I found a link to some gold panning locations in Ohio.
http://miningold.com/states/oh.html

Here is the Buckeye Chapter of GPAA.
http://www.buckeyegold.com/

Look under Ohio claims and you will see three GPAA claims listed. There was two Quartz rocks found at one claim just layered with gold nuggets in them. Value of just the one was $50,000. ??? That was at a mostly flour gold claim...

Does not look like a nugget to me. To many sharp edges.
looks like some form of metal that has been bent and press.
Just a quess.

let use know what it is if you find out. Space rock maybe. :icon_study:

Gold is not hard and bends real easy, it also resists most acids. I can't tell pics are real bad to see some good color reference.

Gold looks like:

You could try checking the spefic gravity of it. Do you have a scale and one of those medicine spoons that has the measurements on the side?

Find the weight of the rock and divide by the volume in ml, or cc3

Specific Gravity = (Mass in gr)
(Volume in ml)

I really hope I did that right..its been a while

Here is a table of some metals specific gravities

http://www.csgnetwork.com/specificgravmettable.html

On another note Did you find it on or near a playground? It looks like what I've heard called monkey's gold. Which is aluminum tarnished by the woodchips/mulch they put down.

Looking closer to it it looks silver/platinum(?) like not gold. I don't think it's gold.

Spirit: I don't remember that exactly either but it seems to be right. Though there are easier ways to do it and SG is not always good as gold can be covered by magnetite, sulfides, oxides etc.

If you have acids try it (even weak ones) as the stronger ones are hazardous or can be. Try a Streak test gold will give you a golden color.

pretty sure it's melted aluminium. The stuff is everywhere especially beaches and campgrounds.
And yes some looks gold and shiny.

Definitely have it tested. Gold nuggets vary in composition. Some look more like the color of a gold coin because of a high copper content. Other nuggets less of a gold color because they are part silver. Then silver is and can be found in a couple Ohio streams, rivers.

I had a piece of metal checked out for free at a local jewelry store. They can test it for you. If it isn't gold, the test will show that...

Here is a photo of a nugget (my finger pointing) I found in GPAA 2000 Mining Guide. I think the holes at the top compare with those of the first photo in this thread.

Some gold that don't look like gold is coated with natural mercury...maybe in this case.
To remove the mercury it needs to be heated up in a pan(OUT DOOR) to get the natural color back.

Humm...in the last 2 photos where the color of the Penny looks more natural, the nugget does appear to be of rather light color. Platinum nugget? I can remember seeing some nice Platinum nugget photos in the past from treasure hunters nugget shooting in Canada. I've seen gold and a Platinum nugget together in a photo more than once from Canada. I think Nickel deposits up there contain a small amount of Platinum also. Ohio gold deposits are from glacial drift gravels, maybe brought down from Canada.

Anyway, how could you test to see if Platinum?
