Ok do any of you change coils in the middle of a hunt?

Detector(s) used
Equinox 800 SE and DFX
I tried this last week as an experiment for those who did not read the post. The results were almost identical used each coil for 1 1/2 hours. But I was wondering if anyone, brand of detector does not matter sees any real improvement and regularly does this. I have an extra lower rod so i keep my stock coil handy. Here was the picture from that particular hunt. My smaller coil, the 5.3 seemed to perform a little better, 35 coins to 30.

I did a couple of times. Started out with the big 14" coil on my GTI 2500, but went back to the standard coil after swinging that big heavy thing wore me out. I didn't notice that big a benefit from using the bigger coil. Claims are that it goes deeper, but I couldn't prove it from the use I have had with it. Monty

Nope. Usually it will be the night before depending on where I plan to end up. Though I do bring a back-up most times in case of damage. Haven't needed it yet, knock wood.

I've switched coils during the hunt, mostly with my dfx. If I got to a really trashy area, I'd swap to the stock coil, or the 5.3 that I had. If I was getting little trash, or good target separation and looking to cover lots of ground (usually in dry sand, parks, and fields), then I'd keep the 1400DD coil on.

The biggest benefit I found, was not so much in finds, but in the amount of ground covered.

Hey Gregg, I too change coils when I go from open fields stc. to wood chips or just smaller areas.
I really like the small sniper coil on the Ace. To me, it seems to pinpoint really accurate and I can pick up coins right next to or under pop tops.....
Thought about the 9x12 bigger coil, but kinda heavy and just an inch and a half larger each direction than the stock coil.....

Keep safe.

I did this at an older school with my EXII from the stock to a 5 inch coil and was rewarded with a mercury dime in excellent condition. I knew there was something there but the EXII couldn't get a lock on the target and was all over the place but with the small coil I zoomed in on the dime and plucked it out of four inches of soil.

When I go to a school or playground I usually take two detectors, one with a "stadard" coil and one with a small 4 to 5 inch coil for the reasons someone else has already stated. I guess that could technically be called switching coils. Monty

I seem to agree my stock gets about 2 more inches but my smaller 5.3 coil is a lot easier to swing and I do not get many signals over 7.0 anyways.

Good point Charlie wish i had a back up when My small coil was erratic from dirt plugging conection pins. I left ended day with 4 coins! :(

I hunt like a snail because even with tone id sometimes I have to listen very closely to know what the dfx is trying to tell.

Exactly how I feel when using the smaller coil, better separation and easier to swing.

Great example thanks, wondering if that motivates you to switch once in a while, I might start doing it more if my car is in right spot. I have a park I am hitting tomorrow it is the worst for trash when you first exit your car and enter the park. But then when you get out in fields larger coil may work better.

Yes also nice to have a backup! :)

The answer is yes but only on rare occasions like when my 5.3" blows up in my face like it has twice this year!

I've got the 4 X 6, stock 9.5, and new 12" coils for my M6. I'm still playing with them, learning the characteristics of each, but I do swap them out as the situation indicates.

I usually start with the stock coil, and if there are a lot of close targets, I'll switch to the 4 X 6. If I'm not getting many hits, I'll go to the 12" for better depth and coverage. They're all mounted on lower rods, so it only takes a minute to swap.

If it's an area I'm familiar with, I'll just start with the appropriate coil.

Often change machines as it can be more productive than a coil change on a particular machine. I have all spare coils with both lower and upper shafts attached. This means no re wrapping the cable and a change can be completed in little more than a minute.

I take 2 machines with me (EX-2) one has the WOT and the other has the 5 sunray mounted. Also take the stock 10, the 8 and a sunray 12. I start out with the WOT and work my way down depending on the conditions and the amount of trash

I cheat DFX... I have a 5" coil on my CZ-3D and an 8" on my CZ-7... Both go with me and if the site is full of junque, which most of the sites I hunt are, the 5" coil puts the hammer down and usually out performs my 8" coil... Suspect this is a direct result of having to hunt much slower and methodical...

Agree 100%, I hunt very slowly in trashy areas, also sticking with the Eclipse 5.3 when I do.
