I am not sure but it looks like some sort of early autoharp. It doesn't have a neck like the pictures of a lute I saw.

I think you are right.. from what I can see in the image and the pictures of zithers online it very well may be.

May be time to take it out of the frame check the edges or back for info.
It could just be me, but somehow the texture doesn't look like a painting, but might have been brushed with one of the various products that give a print more texture and feel of a painting... but I certainly could be wrong.

I believe the artist is Scott addis born 1963 from but I think it is a print on bored but can't say for sure without seeing it in hand

Hope these pictures are a little better to show why I called it a painting but I don't know what artists might do to make it look like paint.
